"God fulfils dreams, even if we have forgotten about it." Leah is one of New Hope's longest serving staff, having served the homeless for 12 years. "When they get their house, you are happy with them, you rejoice with them." In her 13 years with New Hope, Iris has seen many of her residents feeling hopeless about their lives. "It's a long journey (before they can have their own home)," she shared, "that's why I say that our job here is to give them that belief—that we are here to help, to journey with you, and that you are not alone." "No matter your age, you can still make a difference, even if you are young." When COVID-19 cases started appearing in Singapore early last year, Harrison and Sri, then both 18-years old and preparing for their IB exams, decided that they needed to step up and help the vulnerable and disadvantaged in the community. Together with a few friends, they started @Comm.UnitySG2020, a youth-led initiative that seeks to raise awareness about the issue of homelessness in Singapore, mobilise youths, and to ultimately serve displaced families and individuals. It was truly inspiring for us to see their passion and dedication to bring hope into the lives of others. We also had a blast making this video - make sure you watch till the end! "When we serve others, we learn so much." What has bananas got to do with volunteering? Well, Dr Tan Lai Yong has an interesting fact about organically grown bananas that you may not know—watch the video to find out! Dr Tan has spent most of his medical career helping the disadvantaged—including spending 14 years serving the poor in rural Yunnan, China. When we met him at Kampung Siglap Life Skills Training and Retreat Centre, he has this to say about volunteering, "When we volunteer, we grow: we learn best when we are serving, and actually, the flip side is true (as well), we serve best when we are learning and curious all the time."
